Already Licensed? You Don’t Need to Take the Course Again.

If you already hold an Ontario Security Guard Licence and are simply renewing it, you do not need to repeat your original 40-hour security guard training or Ministry exam. Follow the renewal process and provide the required documentation.

No Course.No Exam.Just Renew.

That is roughly $240 and 33.5 hours you do not have to spend. Renewal is the $80 Ministry fee, plus one document.

When Can I Renew My Security Guard Licence?

Ontario allows existing licence holders to renew their licence up to 90 days before the licence expires.

A valid licence is what allows you to work. Check the expiry date on yours and start early, because an expired licence means you cannot legally be on shift until it is back.

Important

Make Sure Your CRJMC Is Current

Your Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check must have been issued within six months of the date you submit your licence application.

If you are applying online, keep the original digital PDF received from the record-check provider.

Before you order

This Is Where Renewals Fail.

Your CRJMC has to be issued within six months of the day you submit your application. Not six months from when you ordered it.

Guards order the check early, gather everything else, and by the time they submit it is seven months old. The application comes back incomplete and the renewal is delayed.

So get everything else ready first, then order your CRJMC and submit straight away. Allow time for identity verification or police review, which can take longer.

Have These Ready Before You Apply

  • Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check
  • ONe-key ID
  • Ontario mailing address
  • Required government-issued identification
  • Licence information
  • Photo, if Ontario requires an updated one
  • Payment method

Once you have everything ready, the online application only takes a few steps.

Why Get Your CRJMC First?

Your CRJMC is one of the key documents needed for your renewal application. Getting it first means that once it arrives, you can have your documents ready and move directly to the Ontario licence renewal application.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. If you already hold the licence and are simply renewing it, you do not repeat the original training or the exam. The Ministry’s application form asks renewing applicants for their existing licence number, not a testing completion number.
